Papago Park sits in between Tempe and Scottsdale (on the border of good and evil respectively). These hills are worn down to the rock, possibly from being in the middle of a large body of water at one time in geologic past.
Only the eastern rock hill is climable though; the western rock hill belongs to the U.S. army reserve and is fenced off. Though you can't tell from the top photograph, a four lane parkway runs through the middle of the east and west rock hills. The path up to the base of the rock hill is smoothly paved with asphalt, so if you bring a dog during the heated summer months, make sure they walk on the dirt or wear protective material on their feet.
On the north downward slope of the eastern hill sits an old amphitheater used mainly in easter services or other small public gatherings.
There are two major routes through the eastern rock hill and one route on the far eastern end of the range which you can climb. For the most part the rock is climbable, however there are a few steep spots and some loose gravel.
Climbing these rocks is fairly easy, but climbing back down is harder than it looks. We've scouted the whole area and have yet to find a way up to the top, however there were a few folks up there on Christmas eve 2005, so it isn't impossible. Don't die please.
